He or she must be able to express the artist's music and producer's concepts and intent through the medium of recording technology. Some look at this as an art form because both music and recording rely on the taste and experiences of those involved. A final master recording will need to be worked on in terms of leveling, equalization (EQ), and dynamics. This process will determine the best possible sonic sound and bring it into a marketable light.

The producer often times are in control of coordinating a recording project, scheduling, and budgetary aspects for the best interest of the artist and the record company. He or she can be hired for a project to fulfill a number of possible duties or might even be given complete control over aspects of a project's artistry, finances and program content.
